DT Rants about Getting Schooled in Other Sports

It was a valiant effort for an early start, but even though we showed up before the frisbee idiots, the field was already occupied by the cricket monkeys. This time, they had an official booking so we had no choice but to move to our alternate field.

The field was actually in pretty good shape. There were some bumps and holes which resulted in several unpredictable bounces but all in all, the ground had settled in quite well. I think a couple more weeks of rain and sun will do that field good.

We only had 13 with the disappearence of the Mick, Swissmiss, Cool Papa and Superdad. We found out later that the Swissmiss was canoodling late into the night and couldn't wake up. We still don't know what happened to the Mick, Cool Papa and Superdad. With an uneven number, I played all-time in the field and the batting team supplied pitcher and catcher.

Rugburn had a superb hitting day. He was sending them deep into center-right for back to back to back home runs. I'm honestly eagerly waiting in anticipation for the day when we can get Rugburn, Rube, The Mick, Superdad, The Generalissimo and Cool Papa on the same day, having their respective hitting streaks. It would be a sight to behold. Whoever won that would be crowned the batting champion of champions. Too bad none of them have hit a walk-off homerun to win a championship... ah the stuff of legends ;)

The teams were suprisingly even, with both teams see-sawing the lead from inning to inning. When one team took a lead, the other team immediately tied and regained the advantage in the next inning. I had expected this race to have ended neck-to-neck in a photo finish until the 6th. The TWOs scored 13 runs during their at-bat to lay the game wide open for them. They strung together hit after hit, and most of their runs came with 2 down. It wasn't that the ONEs couldn't get that last out defensively, it was just that the TWOs were on a hitting streak. Even Horfun got into the action with a sweet opposite field liner that took everyone, including her own team, by surprise. Talk about shock and awe.... The ONEs had no answer when they got up to bat. And the TWOs won by mercy.

Second game was quite interesting as both teams agreed to switch their positional players. Infielders went to the outfield, Outfielders came in. The TWOs had an even better looking infield than in the first game.

We finished about 5ish, which was too late to start on basketball. However, after hearing about 'The J', we decided to cut short our beer time at Joes to head over to Kent Vale for some hoops. With no natural center to guard The Rube, we decided to try the old 'Best player + Ladies' vs Men teams. We did that once with Superdad + Ladies vs the Guys, and we obviously didn't learn our lesson. The guys were taught a lesson in teamwork and passing. Rube dominated below the rim, grabbing all the rebounds. The Ladies meanwhile, were scoring point after point from the floor. The Men simply could not catch a break. No one could make a shot, and even easy layups were denied by the roll of the rim. The guys just couldn't get into the rim... which most of us are used to anyway.

End of the day, Rube and his angels won 4 straight. 10-4, 10-5, 10-3, 10-6. And the worst part? The last three games, it was 3 vs 4. Yes, Rube, Heidi and Burma Girl vs the 4 dopes. And even with the extra man, we still lost. For Shame!!!

We finished too late to go bowling (abt 9.30pm), but the effort was there. We definitely have to try it again. It was really good fun, and the basketball was a great workout!

26 August 2006 - Rube's Angels

ONES: 1B: Indiana; 2B: Diana; 3B: Rube; LF: Jason; CF: Grandpa; RF: Geok
TWOS: 1B: Rickey; 2B: Horfun; 3B: The Venezualan Jaguar; LF: Rugburn; CF: Sandman; RF: Heidi
All Time SS: DT

Game One (6 Innings - Mercy)
ONES: 11
TWOS: 22

Game Two (3 innings)
ONES: 4
TWOS: 8

We played at the alternate field due to some cricket festival on the main field. The ground was not as bad as it usually is there, but it was still rough. The first game was a see-saw affair until the sixth inning. Prior to that each team would score 2-3 per inning to pass the other. Well, in the 6th, the TWOS busted it open for a 13-run inning. In the second game, the teams switched their infields and outfields (thus, for the TWOS, Rickey, the Jaguar and Horfun played outfield). Then, in the last inning, both teams hit opposite their natural side (Thus, Sandman batted right while Diana batted left). The game was fine, but people were starting to tire.

The crew then headed to Joe's for beer. When enough had been consumed to satisfy all, we headed over to Indiana's for basketball. The teams were Rube's Angels (Rube, Heidi, Geok and Horfun [Horfun for only the first game]) against Indiana, Sandman, DT, and Rickey. Well, Rube's Angels ruled. They opened a can of whup-ass on the guys and took 4 straight games to 10. That's right, the two ladies and Rube showed mad b-ball skillz. Rickey - he of the big talk - did not bring his "J", while the other guys just couldn't get a shot to fall.

We missed out on the bowling. All were exhausted, and we went out for pizza at a hawker centre.

NOTES:
1) When we play the alternate field, the field always plays a big role. Bad bounces, rough on the running, etc. Still true; 2) Horfun got hit in the face by a tossed ball. Remarkably, it wasn't DT throwing it (twas, Rugburn); 3) When the ONES doubt the ability of the TWOS to go opposite field, Sandman goes left, Heidi goes left, and Horfun puts one down the 1B line. Back-to-back-to-back; 4) Rickey made no major screw-ups in CF; 5) Diana had a hard time catching Jason's foul balls; 6) Geok and Heidi have good moves to the hoop.

MBP: Rube (on the basketball court)
B3K: Rugburn
Gold Glove: No one on that field
Play of the day: Sandman, Heidi and Horfun on their opposite field hits
DY: Mary (for watching all this all day long)
No "J": Rickey

The Redneck Quadathlon

Hi Folks,

This coming saturday, 26 August 2006, we're going to try something never done before in Saturday Softball history. We're going for 4 sports in one day.

The schedule.....

2.30pm Softball - 9 innings
5pm Basketball - 5 on 5 full court press
6pm Beer - Drink till you drop
8pm Bowling - Knock down all the pins

Hope everyone can make it. Bring cleats for softball, shoes for basketball and socks for bowling.

DT Rants about Extra Bases

If Epic was the word I used to describe last week's game, this week, the word should be Effort. Everyone was hustling hard, taking extra bases, diving for balls...etc. It was Saturday Softball in its purest competitive form. What Rube said was right, we needed the last couple of weeks of great numbers to put back the competitive spirit into our game. We've been going through the motions for most of this year, due primarily to the lack of numbers. But with the recent resurgance, everyone is back out enjoying the game, and it makes a huge difference to how the game is played.

Even Rickey was taking extra bases, and that in itself is a testament to how much fun we had on the field. Aggressive running was the name of the game for the ONEs. The stretched singles into doubles and doubles into triples. They grabbed a massive 5-0 lead within the second inning, and from the looks of it, they were going to take the win. The TWOs ran equally as hard, but they had three secret weapons. 1. Rugburn, 2. Grandpa and 3. Rube. The three of them were destroying the ball. I've never seen the ball hit so hard for a long time. It brings me back to the day when Nigel Kennedy aka the Kiwi was around and when he generated so much bat speed, the ball seemed to break the sound barrier when he made contact. Rube was his normal hard-hitting, hard-charging self, but Rugburn and Grandpa really put some meat on the bat. Where were these two guys when we needed to cruise to an easy victory in the tournament...

The Frisbee Idiots were on the field early this time, so I headed over to the other corner to lay the diamond. Turns out, it was a blessing in disguise. The other corner is actually much better than our usual corner. In fact, we should switch to playing over in the other end. The ground is much more even, and home plate is further away from the cricket turf. Which means there is more space in centerfield. Also, since the cricket monkeys like to hit the ball towards the carpark, we only saw 2-3 balls the entire afternoon hit into our side. Before the cricket monkeys appeared though, the frisbee idiots had the run of the field, in fact, they even set up a picnic stand complete with beach chairs and umbrella on top of the cricket turf. It was too tempting and many a fly ball was hit in that direction to take out the umbrella. Rube tried hard, but his bat failed him. He was still pounding the ball deep into right field, but he couldn't seem to force the direction to the umbrella. Rugburn on the other hand, managed to yank one directly towards the umbrella. It was a thing of beauty, and I was glad I was witness to it. The ball hit the ground about a meter from the beach chair, bounced up and smacked a frisbee idiot right in the back. He was bending over in pain (probably crying as well). It was a beauty. He was still rubbing the mark a couple of innings later. He actually took off his shirt to have his girlfriend inspect the injury, and we could see the bruise from way over in our corner. Kudos to Rugburn. You'd think that after a hit like that, the frisbee idiots would move their rest area. Well, we don't call them idiots for nothing... they stayed, but this time, they had a lookout who watched our bats, and protected the umbrella from any approaching ball. What a moron. They could've just moved into the shade of the walkway.

The cricket monkeys soon arrived (after tea and cucumber sandwiches I'd bet), and as the assholes they are, demanded the use of the bowling green. And most of the area used by the frisbee idiots. That was like a dream come true, watching the cricket monkeys displace the frisbee idiots. And the frisbee idiots could not argue because the cricket monkeys had the field booked. Watching the frisbee idiots pack their things and move away was even better than seeing Rugburn hit the guy. The only thing better was if I could've hit a linedrive to right field and take one of them out in the head, with oodles of blood flowing. That would've made my day.

Sadly, because of our late start (3pm ish), we were soon beset by soccer hooligans. They usually are quite alright, waiting for us to finish, or playing ourside the foul lines, but this time, there was a new bunch. They insisted on playing through our left field, right behind third base and short. They even moved the goal posts to play a full-on 11 a side game. The audacity of it all. Bloody Bastards. We really have to start earlier to avoid these people. If we could start about half an hour earlier, we should be easily in the middle of our second game when the hooligans arrive, and we should finish the games on a high note, instead of arguing with these uncouth, ill-bred, discourteous arseholes.

I digress....
Back to the good stuff.
Highlights.
Rugburn lays the smack down on a frisbee idiot.
Rickey hits a 2 base homerun, and manages to get to 3rd instead of stopping at 2.
Rube, Jason, Generalissimo and Rickey turn doubles into triples with extremely aggressive running.
Burma Girl had a gold glove day. She stopped everything coming her way. Though, she was robbed of two infield flyballs, once by DT, once by Indiana. (In our defense, she didn't call for the ball)
Sandman made more plays pitching for the other team than for his own team.
Generalissimo flashes some leather.
Grandpa kills the ball, 3 times.
DT burns Cool Papa, hitting a blooping fly ball over his head in right field.
Swiss Miss had a gold glove day too. He was catching everything. It was a sight to behold. He even ran down a Sandman hit and caught it inches from the ground.
Jason and Diana showed what a little love can do to improve the right side of the field. If Diana missed, Jason covered... Jason actually made a brilliant play to hold Rube to a single instead of a double. Rube hit a line drive to right, and Jason snagged the ball on the first bounce and threw it quickly in to Diana, and Rube was held at first. Rickey had nothing to talk to Rube about because he's never met him there before.
Cool Papa came in during the 4th inning, and the TWOs lit him up. They scored most of their runs when Cool Papa was on the mound.

Game 2 : ONES 0 : TWOS 4 (3 innings)

The Mick, Burma Girl, Indiana, Rube, Horfun, Heidi, Swissmiss, Clement and DT played basketball after drinks at Joes. We headed down to Kent Vale to get some court action.
Rube was unstoppable under the rim. No one could match his height, and he hustles as hard on the court as he does on the field.
The Mick has got some skills. Probably picked up while selling crack in the back courts of harlem.
Indiana has the stamina and energy of a 18 year old. He was running and running and running. DT (who's half his age) couldn't keep it.
Bruma Girl tackled Heidi to the ground. Whoops all round. Catcalls and requests for Jello and/or Mud to be involved. Sexy...
Horfun is officially more dangerous than DT in IT. She hacked into several wifi networks in Kent Vale.

Next Week...
The Redneck Triathlon.
Softball followed by Basketball, followed by Bowling. Insert beer and plenty of mayonaise. Fried Chicken and Watermelons will be ordered if Cool Papa gets permission to enter.

We're going to try for a 2.45pm start this coming weekend, so we can squeeze basketball before Beer. We'd really appreciate it if folks can start arriving about 2.30pm.

Seeya.

19 August 2006 - The Nobility of the Idiot (Standing next to His Girlfriend under the Umbrella)

ONES: 1B: Rickey; 2B: Diana; 3B: The Venezualan Jaguar; SS: Sandman; LF: The Mick; CF: Heidi; RF: Jason/Cool Papa; Rover: Clement/Jason
TWOS: 1B: Indiana; 2B: Geok; 3B: Rube; SS: DT; LF: Rugburn; CF: Grandpa; RF: Swiss Miss; Rover: Horfun

Game One:
ONES: 15
TWOS: 22

Game TWO... Rickey went to Joe's

It was a great game. Everyone was taking the extra base, and making the defenses work. The TWOs just had too many big guns. If Rube or Rugburn didn't hit a homer, Grandpa would. They just pounded the ONEs into submission. The ONES played good defense, it's just that the TWOs hit them well. One small issue for the ONES: Rickey and the Jaguar scored 9 of their runs. That's just not right (particularly the Rickey part). Overall, it was a great Saturday. What it's all about. The only issue was the cricket and soccer players. The frisbee players weren't that bad. Their fans are idiots, however. One set up a nice umbrella-ed viewing spot that was ruined by the glorious Rugburn. He not only hit the umbrella, he hit the two people underneath it too. The guy looked pissed, and all he could do is stand and stare. Too bad. Don't start camping out in centerfield.

Notes:
1) Grandpa hit his longest homer in memory; 2) Swiss Miss was hitting well, also; 3) Geok was making nice defensive plays, even when she was pitching against her own team; 4) As mentioned above, everyone was base-running like they had studied under Grandpa and Cool Papa; 5) Jaguar/Rickey combo is lethal, but slow...; 6) Rugburn blew the jug he earned for hitting the umbrella by getting caught on a bone-headed running play. There was only 1 out, dude.

Catch: Clement/Horfun 1st: Indiana/Irish, 2nd: Horfun/Diana, 3rd: Diana/Bert, SS: Irish/Generalissimo/Cool Papa, OF: SuperDad, Cool Papa/Generalissimo, Clement/Horfun, Seven(traded)/Indiana

TWOS:
1st: Heidi/Seven, 2nd: Burma Girl, 3rd: Generalissimo(traded)/Rube, SS: DT, OF: The Mick, Jeremy, Jason, Seven/Heidi

Game 1: ONES 8 : TWOS 23 (7 innings mercy)
Game 2: ONES 5 : TWOS 10 (5 innings)

It was an Epic day. The numbers were (for a non-BBQ day in 2006) Epic. The Heat was Epic. The population on the field (including frisbess idiots, soccer players and cricket monkeys) was Epic. The Skill level of play was Epic. The Bats were Epic. It was an Epic day.

DT did the counting since Rickey was off galavanting (sniffing the remnents of LKY's bum on his chair at the Parliment house). The teams looked fairly even, considering that the ONEs had SuperDad, but with the slight overcompensation, the ONEs lacked a proper infield after the 1st inning. With the arrival of the Generalissimo, DT and Indiana conferred to trade the Generalissimo for Seven, to try and even up the defensive gaps. Strangely enough, the ONEs took an early one-run lead in the first inning, and gave up four runs in the second inning after the trade.

With the TWOs wise to the ways of Superdad, his formidable strength was soon stifled by both the Mick and Jeremy. Standing deeper than necessary in the outfield, they managed to catch everything Superdad hit and they proved to be his kryptonite. Superdad did not score. The TWOS however, managed to string together some hits. Their defense held as well, and the ONEs only managed to score 2 runs to their 9 in 5 innings. The game blew wide open in the bottom of the 5th when the ONEs suddenly got their bats going. They scored 6 unanswered runs to pull the difference back to 1 run.

The scores remain unchanged for another two innings when the cricket monkeys came on the field and turned it all around. With the Indiana playing RF and the Generalissimo in CF (Cool Papa lost his cool and nearly stomped off the field because of the cricket monkeys getting in his way), the strong opposite field hitting of the TWOs lineup soon took their toll. The TWOs started putting together hit after hit after hit, culminating with a booming opposite field hit over Indiana's head. He could not be blamed though, because the cricket monkeys were camped in his defensive line, and he could not play any deeper because they were blocking his way. The TWOs however, had no such handicap at bat as they were sending ball after ball trying to hit and permanently maim a cricket monkey. The top of the 7th did not end well for the ONEs. The TWOs had scored 11 runs in that inning, and took an insurmountable 15 run lead. The game ended with Mercy as the TWOs gloves did all the talking to close down the ONEs bats.

Game 2 started off with a significant switch to the diamond. Instead of competing with the cricket monkeys and letting them ruin our day, we moved the diamond about 50 degrees to the left. This freed up centerfield, and only right field was now occupied by the monkeys. The rules also were changed to all right field fly balls called a foul, effectively shutting down right field. Line-drives and bouncing grounders still counted, as there was still a right fielder, albeit playing much shallower than normal.

Having won the first game through mercy, the TWOs were hungry for the sweep. They managed to score in every inning in the second game to yank a 10-5 victory away from the ONEs. Even with the fancy infield glovework of Cool Papa, and the speed of the Generalissimo in the outfield, the TWOs freight train could not be stopped.

Highlights
There were 3 DPs on the day. DT had an assisted 6-3 DP, Jason had a 9-6 DP off Clement who did not tag up, and Cool Papa had another 6-3 DP. '
Before the cricket monkeys showed up, the ONEs outfield was unstoppable. Cool Papa caught out Rube, Indiana caught out The Mick. No one wanted to hit to Superdad.
Cool Papa has some infield skills, but he looked uncomfortable playing short and he forgot to cover the bases.
Clement was unstoppable in the field. His glove was a ball magnet. He caught everything that was hit near or to him, dropping nothing.
The Swissmiss is a better 3rd baseman than a catcher. I'm amazed how he can drop the simplest of plays at catcher, but catch and field the hardest hit balls at 3rd. Damned Strange.
Indiana threw his glove. A memorable occasion as no one has ever seen him angry before. Damned cricket monkeys.
Seven is the NEW monk. He gave the Irish a double by watching her run instead of catching the ball. Luckily the ball did not roll after it landed, or he would have given her a HR instead.
Cool Papa showed his affections for Heidi. Giving her a black eye. 40-ounce, wife-beater and joint not included.
Heidi sat out 5 innings while nursing her black eye.
Jeremy is Superdad's Kryptonite. He even caught one of Superdad's deep flyballs while falling over.
Horfun was hitting deep. Only the Mick could catch her hits.
Rube tried valiantly to hit a cricket monkey. Close, but no cigar.
DT and Rube are combining to be a pretty good infield team. Much better than arod and jeter.

DT Rants about Getting Schooled

First game, National Pride at stake. We haven't had a 'Singaporeans vs Expats' game in a long time. Last game was probably 2 years ago before we lost the Tan Family. This time, we actually outnumbered the expats 7 to 5, so we offered one of our ladies to their cause (insert SPG joke here). Rickey picked Horfun since she's not in the country most of the time. We had no chance. By the third inning, the Singaporeans were 10 runs behind going to bat. We managed to pull one run back, but we were soon behind 10 runs again in the middle of the fourth. Somehow, we managed to get back another run to hold off mercy, but in the next inning, the expats scored another 4 runs to take a 16-2 lead. That we managed to string together some hits to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th was a testament to our determination not to go down in a mercy. Too little too late though.

Second game, Male Pride at stake. With our exceptionally even numbers today, we actually had 7 guys to 5 girls, I figured it would be a good time to put our 'Kyle II vs the rest theory' to the test. I offered a suggestion that we play 6 guys vs Kyle II+the girls, and the idea was met with some approval. I did not expect an easy fight, in fact, I did not expect a victory as the girls line up was pretty damn strong. All things considered, if we had played Men vs Women (without Kyle II), the game would have ended just as close. Kyle II only made about 3-4 outs and only scored about 6-7 runs. The ladies were playing excellent small ball, advancing runners and hitting singles. Their defence rocked too. Any ground balls to short or second was easily snapped up by Joyce and Diana. They even combined for 3 attempted double plays (only one of which was successful). Any balls hit into the outfield was similarly snapped up by Horfun and Heidi. Though Horfun had some initial problems getting the high fly balls, she soon got the measure of them and helped put us guys out of our misery. I did make the mistake of giving away third base, I figured that they don't run as fast as us guys (I SHOULD have suggested letting Rickey stop at 3rd too while I was at it). Immediately after my suggestion, the ladies loaded the bases and Kyle came up to bat to hit a booming grandslam.... DOH! Although, the ladies only managed to use third base about 3 times in the game, and only scored from there twice, so it wasn't much of an impact.

All in all, it was quite a good day. We could've used more numbers (at least 2 more), but the weather was superb (cool, cloudy and not at all hot), and the field was perfect (slightly soft and damp after the morning shower, but not soggy and wet). We didn't even have to contest the field with the frisbee idiots (who later came at 2) or soccer players or cricket monkeys.

9 August 2006 - Kyle's Angels

Two separate games were played. Both used Prof Zen/Indiana rules.

The first game was Singaporeans v. Foreigners (plus Horfun). The line-up was....
The Maju-lahs: 1B: Geok; 2B: Diana; SS: DT; OF: Heidi, Male Jo, Jason
Foreign (Talent?): 1B: Rickey; 2B: Horfun; SS: Sandman; OF: Superdad (Kyle II), Irish Joyce, Indiana

Game ONE (5 innings - Mercy)
Majulahs: 5
FT: 16
The key to the game was Superdad's balls sliding past Heidi in the outfield. Following aneuryisms, all was fine. Also, Irish Joyce snuffed out any potential momentum with a nice stretching catch off of a good hit from Geok. The supposed Foreign Talent could have finished it off earlier, but weird drop balls kept happening. On the final out, DT scrambled quicker than he would upon seeing Princess Leia at a Star Wars convention to get a past ball (he was playing catcher).

NOW FOR THE REAL GAME OF THE DAY....
DT proposed that we have Kyle II and all the ladies take on the rest. Well, Kyle's angels took us down... BAD.
Kyle's Angels: 1B: Geok, 2B: Diana; SS: Irish Joyce; LF: Kyle II; CF: Heidi; RF: Horfun
The Angel's Bee-achs: 1B: Indiana; 2B: DT/Rickey; SS: Male Jo; LF: Sandman; CF: Rickey/DT; RF: Jason

Kyle's Angels: 16
TAB: 10

First of all, the ladies hit very well. They would put some on, and then Kyle II would hit a homer. Also, they played defense well. Irish Joyce held down short, while Heidi and Kyle II caught numerous hits to the outfield. With that said, DT also gave away third base to the ladies (meaning they could stop there; they didn't have to score from 2B - a cornerstone of Prof. Zen rules. What was he thinking?).

NOTES:
1) There needs to be a new category: B3K2 (Best Batter Besides Kyle II); 2) Rickey should have stayed in bed. Even when he was hitting well in the 2nd game, Horfun and Heidi had his mojo. Kyle made a spectacular diving catch of his best hit in the last inning; 4) The ladies played great D.

MBP: Kyle II
BB3K2: Sandman
Gold Glove: Irish Joyce
Play of the Day: Kyle II
Pimp Daddy: Kyle II

DT Rants

There were 22, yes, TWENTY-TWO players on the field on Saturday. We've not seen those numbers since forever. What a great turnout. If only we can continue to see these numbers for a couple more months. We did start later than usual though, but even with the late start, we managed to get in two good games. The numbers did not look good at 3pm and we decided to kick off the game with only 14 at 3.15. Somehow, the numbers bloomed and we were fielding two full teams (including pitcher, catcher and rover) by 3.30. The teams looked slightly uneven at the start, with Rickey doing a Guppy and loading one team. With his attempt to compensate for the stupendous Superdad, he loaded the opposite team with a slightly advantageous lineup. However, little did he know that Superdad was benching himself in favor of his wife, Supermum. Superdad was taking care of the kids and the pink castle instead. Even without Superdad, Rickey's argument that the ONEs 'had Rube' was incongruous as he loaded the TWOs with an all-star infield and outfield. No matter, even though the TWOs had the better lineup defensively and offensively, they did not have the never-say-die spirit of the ONEs.

The ONEs kicked off the first game by shutting down the TWOs big bats with strong defense. They took an early lead by the 3rd inning with an excellent batting lineup orchestrated by the Rube. The Rube, taking a leaf out of DT's tournament lineup, devised a magnificant batting rotation comprising of single hitters followed by a powerful cleanup batter. Single after single followed by a powerful grandslam soon demoralised the TWOs, and the ONEs pulled ahead. They did not manage to hold off the TWOs for long, as the TWOs clawed their way back run by defiant run. Both teams put up stellar displays of hitting and glovework, but in typical SaturdaySoftball style, neither team was consistant enough to hold a dominant lead. With the ONEs close to winning the first game by mercy in the 5th with a 15-6 score, the TWOs fought back courageously. They strung together a series of hits to pull back the difference and by the 8th inning, they were in sight of a win. At the top of the 9th, the TWOs forged ahead by one run, finally overtaking the ONEs, at 19-18. The ONEs were not about to give up though, as they had the heart of their rotation coming up to the plate. Feeling the pressure, H, Jason and Fei combined to put together a spectacular display of small ball hitting. Jason finally crossed the plate with the RBI going to Fei for the win.

The Second game saw the TWOs lash out in a fury. Coming so close to a win the previous game, they were not about to let themselves get swept by the ONEs. Pulling out all stops, the piled on the hits to take a massive 8 run lead by the 2nd inning with barely a whisper of an answer from the ONEs. Anyone else would have rolled over and died, but the ONEs were not about to give up. They were not prepared to split the series; They wanted the sweep. At the bottom of the 9th, 8 runs down, the ONEs struck back. They struck hard and with a determination unmatched even by the golden glovework of the TWOs. The TWOs had no answer as the ONEs scored run after run finally tying the game before the final out. 10-all was the score as we went into extra innings. Buffered by their strong at-bat, the ONEs held steady and refused to let the TWOs score another run. The TWOs suddenly found themselves facing a brick wall and none of their batters could find a gap, much less a chink in the ONEs' armour. Interestingly enough, there were calls for a 'draw' but these calls came in the middle of the 10th inning... why they were not suggested before the inning started is beyond me, but the ONEs were not about to give up the goat. They concurred on calling the game a tie, AFTER they had their chance at bat not in the middle of the inning. That the TWOs were prepared to pull this shinanigen in the middle of the inning was a testament to how much they feared another loss. Their fears were soon realized as Indiana hit a walk off triple for DT to score for the win. A clean sweep by the ONEs with both wins going to Burma Girl who pitched manificently. Much props must go to Seven who managed to get back-to-back Ks from Swiss Miss and Horfun. If only it were someone else besides NigeyPooh next at bat, Seven might've had a SAS record with 3 straight Ks.

Highlights:
Burma Girl teaches The Mick a lesson in respecting women... Twice. Both times hitting deep fly balls way over his head.
Heidi shows that she knows how to swing the big stick. Girlfriends the world over can learn a thing or two about stroking the bat.
Supermom aka The Better Half aka Amy showed us why Kyle II has been hiding her at home every saturday. She was not only productive at bat, advancing runners, but she showed some great flashes of leather as well. If only we could see both of them on the field at the same time.
Rube let the frisbee idiots know that rightfield is not safe no matter how deep they play. He hit the ball from the far corner almost to the carpark walkway...twice.
Swiss Miss had a bad day. Striking out swinging once and made horrible plays at home. DT and Rube could've killed him when he literally threw away the ball on a live play.
The Sandman and The Generalissimo proved to be a fantastic combination except when compared to DT and Rube who held down the left side of the infield with aplomb.
Seven could've won a Cy Young if not for Burma Girl's extraordinary performance. Last time someone pitched a complete double-header win was in 1926 by Dutch Levson (coincidentally in Aug as well).
Jason had a career day. Batting for a thousand and holding the fort in right field. Even with the lefty bat of The Sandman, nothing got by Jason. He turned doubles into singles.
Indiana proved once again that age or a quadruple bypass will not slow him down. He hit a massive home run in the second inning and chased down and almost overtook DT who was on first base.
Superdad was incredible. He handled his four young girls aged 7 and below with the grace of a ballerina, the strength of a linebacker and the power of a juiced Barry. His kids were running non-stop throughout our entire two games and he kept up. No wonder he's in such great shape.
The Irish hasn't lost her step, showing us an old school guppyesque swinging bunt.

Although everyone was tired and worn from the strenuous day in the sun, it was all worth it as we had a BBQ to look forward to. It was fantastic to see so many old faces who though have left the field of honour, have not left the SAS family. The new members of the family have finally had a chance to be initiated into the mysteries of the SAS BBQ and to meet the people whose names are now mentioned fervently in a roll of honour. For many, it was great to see and catch up with folks no longer on the active roster, due to parental or other commitments. Seeing old stalwarts like The Irish, Hassie, Guppy, Windmill, Lloyd and Coach rubbing shoulders with the new blood is what makes Saturday Softball a great family, and makes the hot saturdays spent running in the sun all worthwhile.

Cheers

5 August 2006 - Let's have a BBQ

ONES: P: Burma Girl; C: Swiss Miss; 1B: Indiana; 2B: The Better Half; 3B: Rube; SS: DT; OF: Heidi, Say Hey Kid, Nigey-pooh, Jason, Horfun
TWOS: P: Seven; C: Mary/Diana; 1B: Rickey; 2B: Joyce (Irish)/Diana; 3B: The Venezualan Jaguar; SS: Sandman; LF: The Mick; CF: Boston; RF: Clement; Rover: Grandpa

Game One:
ONES: 20
TWOS: 19

Game Two (3 Innings, plus 1 extra to break the tie)
ONES: 11
TWOS: 10

Wow, what a day. Look at that turn out. We should have a BBQ every week. It was a hot day, and the ball was even hotter. Two excellent games. Both were won by the ONES in a walk-off fashion. The ONES really controlled the first game. The TWOS clawed their way back, but were unable to hold off the ONES in that one. In the second one, the TWOS blew it. Up 10-2, they gave up too many runs in the 3rd (and supposedly final) inning. Both games saw great hitting, great fielding (usually), some bonehead errors, and some incredible rallies on both sides. This is what Saturday Softball is all about. A week to remember.

NOTES:
1) Kyle II is now Superdad. Give him a pink castle, and he can take care of kids for hours. The real benefit is getting Amy (the Better Half) to play. After seeing her skillz, Superdad can stay at home and take care of the kids. We'll take her; 2) The Swiss Miss wins the Zidane award. When he gets upset at Rickey's mad running skillz getting the best of him, he lost it. Almost got head-butted. His actions lead to the Jaguar scoring, and Rube having an aneuryism; 3) DT was good with the glove this week; 4) Heidi got on base every time she was up; 4) Joyce flew around the world to play this week. She brought a case of the swinging bunts though; 5) The Mick was a double-hitting machine for the TWOS.

MBP: BBQ (brought out the numbers)
MBP (Most bestest Parent): Superdad
Gold Glove: DT
Biggest Bat: Rube
Best Bat: Heidi
Zidane: Swiss Miss
Best Smack Talk: The Mick
DY: Irish Joyce

SPECIAL BBQ Report (NOTES):
1) Don't let a Frenchman drink. Damn. That was nasty; 2) Old School. It was great to see The Coach, Hassie, The Cheetah, Windmill, Guppy and Irish Joyce at the BBQ. 3) Also, good to see "affiliated" members, Kari and Maggie May, as well as all the familar members; 4) Thanks to those who oversaw the grill (particularly Coach and Heidi); 5) Even Cool Papa showed up; 6) Ix-nay on the ulgari-Bay....

Aloha 2006

Hi Folks,

It's that time of year again, and I don't mean National Day. Time for a some good meat, good booze and good friends.

The theme - we're going to try this - will be Hawaiian. If you have a floral shirt or skirt, wear it.

So, what are we celebrating? Let's list the reasons:

1) Babies: Guppy and DY are new Dads. Glasses will be raised in celebration.
2) Return of recent participants: Horfun, the Mick, the Venezualan Jaguar and Cool Papa are back (or will be back). Tales from their trips will be told, and Cool Papa's tales are always enjoyable.

3) Return of an (recent) old school player: Joyce (Irish) is flying in special just for ball and the BBQ. If she's flying from the States, you've got no excuse for missing it.

4) Marriage: Dom got married since the last BBQ.
5) Farewell to Swiss Miss and Welcome to a whole new breed SAS regulars into the family.

The Menu so far

Rickey: Puu Puu
Kyle II: Mysterious Dessert
Indiana: Sambal Stingray, Prawns
Geok: Burmese Beef
H and Maggie: Veggies
DT: Lechon (Roasted Suckling Pig Philippino Style)

Come one, come all!!
